Face of the Race – Roman Horicka

Three-time Leadville Trail 100 MTB finisher Roman Horicka loves the thrill of competition so much he’s competing in every single 2014 Leadville Race Series MTB event on his way to the big show in August.

How many times have you competed in the Leadville Trail 100 MTB? What’s your favorite thing about the race?
I have competed in the LT100 MTB  three consecutive years. My favorite part of the race is the thrill and excitement I feel at the start line when all the racers are geared up to go.

This year you’re competing in all the mountain bike qualifiers, correct? Which of those events have you raced before? What made you decide to set this goal?
That is correct. So far this year, the Austin Rattler MTB was the first event I competed in and I’m looking forward to going back to Wilmington Whiteface in June. The thrill of competition is what gets me motivated.

What are you looking forward to about Wilmington Whiteface? Since you’ve done it previously, tell us how it helps you prepare for Leadville?
I know now what to expect since last year was my first year competing there. The Wilmington Whiteface is not to be underestimated. It is a tough ride and I think that is what helps all racers prepare for the big one in Leadville.

What are you focusing on in your training and preparation for a full summer of events?
I just keep doing what I feel is best for me and I have a trainer who I work with for general fitness.

Tell us about your bike.
29” Trek Superfly hardtail.

What’s your favorite pre-race dinner? What about breakfast?
Pasta for dinner. Fruit, cereal, nuts and egg whites work for me for breakfast.

We hear you’re thinking of building a second home in Leadville. Why Leadville?
I love Colorado and Leadville is under consideration due to the fact it has a great hometown feel and lots of surrounding nature.
