Healthy Eats: Super Seedy Smoothie

By Trish Coffman

We’ve been hearing a lot about the superpowers of seeds, those itty-bitty nutritional dynamos that help you pack in protein, fiber, Omega 3s and more. You may know they’re good for you, but it can be hard to know how to incorporate them into your diet. Our go-to: put them to work in a smoothie.

You will need:

3 to 4 ice cubes

Fresh produce — Mix and match to find your favorite combination:

  • A few handfuls of greens, such as kale or spinach
  • ½ to ¾ C of fruit, such as 1 banana, chopped pineapple or mango, or berries (Tip: keep frozen fruit on hand to blend a lush smoothie at a moment’s notice; if using, defrost slightly before adding to the mix, since frozen fruit tends to clog blenders.)

Seeds — Choose one type or a combination; 2 tablespoons total for a single smoothie usually does the trick:

  • Chia seeds
  • Hemp seeds
  • Flax seeds (roasted or ground)

Sweetener, to taste (optional):

  • Stevia
  • Honey
  • Agave nectar

Water or coconut water

Combine ice cubes, greens, fruit, seeds and sweetener (if using) in a blender. Cover at least halfway with cold water or coconut water (the quantity will depend on how thick you want your smoothie), then blitz until all ingredients are combined and pureed.
