LEADVILLE — At the top of the destructive Columbine Mine climb, Ricky McDonald did the math and realized, after changing three flats in the first half of Saturday's Leadville Trail 100, he wasn't going to finish in under nine hours.
"So I backed off a bit and had some fun," he said of his decision at the 12,424-foot summit.
After his 3,000-foot descent, McDonald was on his way back to Leadville when he saw his pal Grace Ragland. Incredibly, McDonald turned around and rode back up with Ragland for a bit, offering encouragement.
